Faster More Reliable Switching (FRMS Update)

Writer: Tom McGlynnTom McGlynn

Under new faster switching arrangements, the following changes will become effective for gas and power:

  • The fastest switch possible will be five working days for domestic and non-domestic meter points, which will be reviewed by Ofgem at a later date with a view of reducing this to one working day (domestic) or two working days (non-domestic)

  • The slowest switch possible is 28 calendar days in advance

  • The objection window will be set to two working days for non-domestic meter points and one working day for domestic meter points

Transition*

The run up to 18th July 2022 will require suppliers to hold back new switches designed for the new Central Switching Service (CSS). In order for the CSS to be able to process such an abnormal load, a five working day "market pause" will commence immediately on go live.

As a result, switches with an effective date of 19/07/2022 and 20/07/2022 will not be achievable for most suppliers. As the CSS go live has deliberately been set for mid-month it is expected that consumer impact will be minimal.

*All dates subject to change. A final go-or-no-go decision is due on 30th June 2022.

What does this mean for new customers joining / leaving Suppliers during this window?

Any customer who has a contract end date within this window, the obligation is on the current provider at that point to ensure that they are not negatively impacted with any out of contract charges should the customer wish to leave at their existing contract end date
